The Only Glove Brand Built for Utility Crews
Youngstown Glove Company makes technical hand protection for the people who build, maintain, and protect the electrical grid. Every glove we make is designed for the demands of field work — from overhead line construction to underground cable splicing to substation maintenance. We have been utility-focused for nearly two decades.
Youngstown Glove Company was founded in 2002 with a straightforward goal: make the best performance work gloves available. In our early years we served construction and industrial markets, earning a reputation for quality that set us apart from commodity glove manufacturers. In 2008, we became the first performance glove company licensed to use DuPont™ Kevlar® brand fiber — a partnership that signaled where we were headed.
Between 2006 and 2008, we had the opportunity to develop climbing gloves with major west coast Utilities. We learned a lot about the demands of the trade, the safety focus and the need for high quality performance and protection. We saw an industry that was underserved: crews doing some of the most technically demanding, physically punishing work in the country, often wearing gloves that weren’t designed with them in mind.
In 2011, after the height of the financial crisis, we walked away from retail distribution. It was a calculated bet on the utility market — and on our ability to build gloves worthy of it.
Most glove manufacturers serve dozens of industries. We serve one. That focus shapes everything — the materials we source, the tests we run, the standards we meet, and the crews we spend time with in the field.
Our gloves are built for flame-resistance and arc hazards, high-dexterity line work, cut and puncture resistance, and the seasonal extremes that utility field crews face year-round. We don’t add a utility line to a general catalog. The entire catalog is the utility line.
"Youngstown is the only glove brand purpose-built for utility crews."
We don’t design gloves in isolation. Our product development process starts in the field — with lineworkers, substation technicians, underground crews, and the safety managers responsible for keeping them protected. We listen to what breaks, what wears out, what gets in the way, and what keeps a glove on a worker’s hand all day instead of in their back pocket.
That feedback loop is continuous. Every new product and every product update runs through real field conditions before it goes into production. We test to the applicable ASTM standards in the laboratory. We test to the realities of the job in the field.
Not how to make it cheaper. That question drives every decision we make — the leathers we source, the patterns we cut, the thread we use, the wear areas we reinforce. Everything gets evaluated in the field and in the laboratory, continuously. A glove that performs well today should perform better next year.
Quality is not a marketing word for us. It is the only standard we hold ourselves to.
“Our promise is to always build the best gloves that we can.”
Springfield: Completing the Hand Protection Package
In 2027, Youngstown is opening a new manufacturing facility in Springfield, Missouri dedicated to voltage-rated rubber insulating gloves. For utility crews, rubber insulating gloves and leather protectors are required PPE — worn together as a system when working on or near energized equipment.
When the Springfield facility comes online, Youngstown will be able to supply every glove a utility worker needs — from the rubber insulating glove to the leather protector worn over it — from a single source committed entirely to this market. Our goal has always been to be the complete hand protection partner for our utility accounts. Springfield gets us there.
